The professional musician has normalized the fact of receiving no compensation for their work until reaching a certain level of artistic prestige. However, I believe this can only lead to abandoning a musical career in favor of other professions that do make life economically sustainable.
We know that a musical career demands many hours of dedication and great sacrifice. Being aware of this commitment, it is imperative that we demand fair remuneration for our artistic activities.
It is quite common to see professional musicians offering concerts without demanding any kind of payment, harming those musicians who do insist on being paid, in the hope of stumbling upon the so-called and long-desired “great opportunity of my life”: whether by attracting the attention of an influential figure in the musical world or by receiving the financial support of a generous and wealthy music lover—both possibilities far removed from reality.
We could say that music is a “service” that many people wish to consume, yet many often do not understand that they must pay in order to enjoy it. Some even feel offended by this idea, and ironically, in many cases the musician is required to pay in order to have the opportunity to perform. For those outside the world of music, it would be unthinkable to complete an academic degree and then embark on a profession without any compensation.
I believe that our own way of thinking has, in some way, influenced the perception the public has of us. Therefore, it is essential that we demand respect as professionals so that society understands that what we do is work—and that it must be paid.
The well-known adage “for the love of art” will not cover your expenses nor help you achieve your dreams… so, do you charge or not?
Cobrar o no cobrar… ¿Esa es la cuestión?
El músico profesional ha normalizado el hecho de no recibir ninguna compensación por su trabajo hasta alcanzar cierto prestigio artístico. Sin embargo, creo que esto solo puede conducir al abandono de la carrera musical en favor de otras profesiones que sí hagan su vida sostenible económicamente.
Sabemos que la carrera musical demanda numerosas horas de dedicación y de mucho sacrificio. Conscientes de este compromiso, es imperativo que exijamos una remuneración justa por nuestras actividades artísticas.
Es bastante común ver a músicos profesionales ofreciendo conciertos sin exigir ningún tipo de remuneración, perjudicando al músico que sí lo exige, con la esperanza de tropezar con la llamada y anhelada: “gran oportunidad de mi vida”; ya sea captando la atención de una figura influyente en el ámbito musical o recibiendo el respaldo financiero de un generoso melómano adinerado; ambas opciones, muy alejadas de la realidad.
Podríamos decir que la música es un “servicio” que muchos desean consumir pero muchas veces no entienden que deben pagar para su disfrute. Algunos incluso se sienten hasta ofendidos ante esta idea, e irónicamente, en muchas ocasiones, se le exige al músico que pague para tener la oportunidad de tocar. Para aquellos ajenos al mundo de la música, sería impensable completar una carrera académica y luego embarcarse en una profesión sin ninguna compensación.
Considero que nuestra forma de pensar ha influido de alguna manera en la percepción que el público tiene sobre nosotros. Por lo tanto, es esencial que nos hagamos respetar como profesionales para que la sociedad entienda que lo que hacemos es un trabajo que debe ser pagado.
El conocido adagio “por amor al arte” no cubrirá tus gastos ni ayudará a realizar tus sueños… entonces, ¿cobras o no cobras?
